Adult Small Boat Level 2
Adult Small Boat Level 2 is taught at Saylorville Lake on FJs. This is a 15 hour weekend course that teaches basic sailing skills on small boats.
You will learn sailing terminology, rigging & derigging a boat, knot tying, stopping and starting a boat, leaving and returning to the beach or dock, tacking and jibing, capsize and overboard recovery.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to confidently sail a small boat on their own. All classes are taught by certified US Sailing instructors.
Who should take this course?
You must be 18 years of age or older to take this course. Students under the age of 18, but over the age of 15, must have a parent or guardian accept the SYCSS agreements and waivers to take this course. A parent or guardian must contact SYCSS at email@example.com or 515-599-SAIL(7245) for instructions to register a minor for this course.
You must have completed our Adult Small Boat Level 1 course and be interested in building your sailing skills and/or racing.
Ability to swim 50 yards using any stoke and tread water for 2 minutes.
The course is taught according to US Sailing's Small Boat Sailor Certification. We will build upon the knowledge and skills learned in Adult Small Boat Level 1. A US Sailing Certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the course.
How will I spend my time?
This three day course runs from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (with a 1 hr lunch break) on Saturday and Sunday. We will spend about 3 hours on classroom instruction, 3 hours on land drills, and 9 hours on the water.
What should I bring?
Clothes appropriate for sailing (expect to get wet), towel and change of clothes, proper fitting type III life jacket (optional, available to borrow for free at Gray's Lake), closed toe shoes, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses with neck strap, water bottle, lunch (or money for concession stand), pen and notebook.
